TANZANIA (information)
stay: 2006/Jan/22..2006/Jan/28, 2006/Mar/29..2006/Jun/01
General View ---------
There were often rain while I was there. Water from the tap is duty. Including
cooking you'd better use a bottle water. Restaurant must use the duty water.
You should be careful of your health. I often rushed into a hospital.
I got TANZANIA visa at the border / $50 (single 3 months)
Economy ---------
- $1=Ts1130..1350
- ATM for visa are many.

1500..2500, Internet; 500..1000/h, chai (coffee); 20, mango; 200, coconuts;
200
Especially Internet is cheaper than MALAWI and KENYA.
Food ---------
Because of Indian influence? The Tanzanian dishes are more tasty than other
African countries.
In Zanzibar There is 'Uji Kisheti' like a rice gruel with spice. 'Urojo' is like a curry taste stew. 'Biriyani' is cooked rice with meat, vegetable and so on.
In Moshi you may find 'MBE(N)GE (banana beer),' which is a local beer. This is similar to 'Shake Shake,'
which is in MALAWI and ZAMBIA.
Accommodation ---------
They have parking area as long as there's no note. But the security is
your own responsibility.
You may pitch a tent at a petrol station by negotiation. In Dar the accommodations are relatively expensive. You'd better stay at another
town if it's a long-term stay.

in Stone Town (Zanzibar Island)
note; While I was here (off-season), $8..10 including breakfast is the average price for a room. You may discount by telling a long-term

a lie.

Flamingo Guest House (inside of the stone town, a little difficult to find)

Ferry;
'Flying Horse' (Dep.) everyday Dar1230, Zan2200, $20 (non-resident) including the tax, $5
There seems to be a $15 ferry, but 'Flying Horse' is popular among tourists.
Foreigners will be guided to the outside deck seats, but you can have a
seat in a air-conditioned room.
There's no ferry which can carry vehicles, though I know a tourist who
carried his motorcycle by the ferry with difficulty (Ts40,000).
CAUTION; At Dar port, there are pickpockets and swindlers who are trading tickets and so on. The all agents around the ticket offices are liars. You must ignore them and buy the ticket at the window directly. All ferry
tickets include the port tax, $5.

They are suspect. They arrange the ferry ticket, tour and so on. But later they tell you
a different thing. For example, saying later that the ferry is canceled
and arranged another expensive ferry ticket. And try to charge more money.
Other tourists also had a time of the same handiwork here.

in Alsha
petrol; 1370/L
'SHOPRITE (supermarket)' (along 'Sokoine Rd.')
It's one idea to buy food here before the safari.
note; This is the last petrol station town when you go to Nairobi (KENYA). To
the border is 110 km. Next petrol station is Namanga (KENYA side border
town). From the border to Nairobi is about 180 km.
ATM in KENYA is at Kajiado which is 87 km from the border.

motorcycle repair;
'Mami garage' (along the main road, no sign, behind a house, between 'Ngorongoro Safari
Resort' and 'Crater Highlands S.S.')
Mr. Muzamiru has more reliable skill than other African mechanic. It's a little difficult
to find the workshop, but try to look for the motorcycles behind a house.
in Ngorongoro Conservation Area;
note; A certain leaflet map shows the movement time by WALK in the CA (That's a walking safari map). The guide try to explain that
it's a required time for movement by CAR. Then they try to plan too much time and days for safari.
Basically inside of the crater a half day is enough for Safari.
(in May, before the high season)
rental car; $120/day (with a driver and guide) (You can discount!)
Without a driver and guide becomes expensive.
I hired a guide, 'DC (Dismas)' and a driver, 'Simon.' There was no trouble. They were reliable and kind. You can hire them
at the above information centre. In Ngorongoro C.A. you can sleep only
in the permitted lodge, which is expensive. If you don't want to cost too
much, you'd better arrange it with them in advance.
Ngorongoro C.A. gate;
admission (person); (non-resident) $30/24h
admission (car); (registered in TANZANIA) 5000/24h, (non-registered in
TANZANIA)$30/24h
descending the crater; $100/car (Safari is inside of the crater.)
You don't have to pay the admission for your guide and the driver because
they are free. At the gate there is a small exhibition house which has
a part of replica of Laetoli Footprint Trackway.
Olduvai Gorge;
museum; 3000 / There is a replica of Laetoli Footprint Trackway and the monument (replica?)
of the great journey.
Laetoli;
There are footprints 3.6 million years ago (Laetoli Footprint Trackway),
though they are already covered with rocks. Near the footprints there is
a monument of the great journey by Dr. SEKINO.
You need a permission to visit here. In Dar there seems to be a headquarter for it. You may get the permission at 'Olduvai Gorge Museum' with Ts20,000 by negotiation.
Government Establishments (visa) ---------
in Dar es Salaam
MOZAMBIQUE Embassy (along ' Garden Ave.')
|
single 30 days |
multiple 30 days |
multiple 60 days |
| Ordinary (2 days later) |
$40 |
$60 |
$80 |
| Urgent (the next day) |
$55 |
$65 |
$90 |
In MALAWI and SWAZILAND are cheaper to get MOZAMBIQUE visa than here. (Refer to 'MALAWI)'
SUDAN embassy (along 'Ali Hassan Mwinyi Rd.' about 10 min. walk from YMCA.)
A certain tourist was said that he have to wait about one month to get
a visa. There's a little more possibility than in KENYA to get a visa.
RWANDA embassy (along 'Ali Hassan Mwinyi Rd.' about 10 min. walk from YMCA.)
single (? month) $40 / You need to declare your entry day!
(At the border $60)
JAPANESE Embassy (along 'Ali Hassan Mwinyi Rd.' about 5 min. walk from YMCA.)
Border ---------
Songwe-Kyela (entry from MALAWI);
No money is charged. You can get a visa at the border, single 90 days $50. This is multiple entry only between UGANDA and KENYA. You need to buy
automobile insurance here. The street exchangers are there.
Namanga (Alsha-Nairobi) (leaving for KENYA);
No money is charged. The government officers of both sides are kindly.
(KENYA side)
You can get KENYA visa at the border. single (3 months) $50, transit (max 7 days) $20.
road tax; (1 week) free, (1 month) $20, (3 months) $50 / You can extend it at customs later
(refer to 'KENYA')
If you have an AIT/FIA carnet, it's easy to pass the customs. If you don't
have it, I heard the procedure gets troublesome. First, you have to go
to the automobile federation in Nairobi leaving your vehicle at the border.
And submit documents and pay much deposit there. After the procedure you
can go back to the border and you can enter with your vehicle. When you
leave KENYA, you can refund the deposit, though it is very hard.
Road ---------
Basically main national roads are paved.
(hearsay) The western part of TANZANIA, near BURUNDI the road is worse. From Dodoma
to Makuyuni (Alsha direction) is under construction.
Bagamoyo-Msata[64 km]: earth road with puddles
Makuyuni-Ngorongoro Conservation Area Gate; paved (You may watch animals (giraffe, elephant and so on) in this section.)
Dodoma-Makuyuni; under construction for pavement (I heard.)
Arusha-Nairobi (KENYA); The paved road is going in the savanna. That's a nice view.
GPS (download)---------
- tanzania.gdb (for GARMIN 'Map Source' file)
- tanzania.rtf (GPS eXchange format file) You need to rename the file!
- plain text (html)
