stay: 2005/Sep/29..2005/Oct/15

It looks like ANGOLA. There are often the suspension of the water supply. Petrol is also little there, though there are many black markets. Some people can speak English. But most people speak Portuguese.

There are many kind of prices. In SWAZILAND it seems to be the cheapest.

They have enough parking space as long as there's no note in the following. But the security is your own responsibility.
At a petrol station, you may pitch a tent free by negotiation!
Even though at a camp site, you may not get water because their water supply were often cut off.
Bush-camping is dangerous because there are land mines still now. Basically there are red poles or skull signes.

diving centre;
They say you can watch a whale shark on the way to a reef. But you seldom watch it, I think. The best idea is to join the snorkelling course in 'Diversity scuba.' You can watch whale sharks many times in this course.
If you want to join 'MANTA Reef' course, you need a diving licence which is available 20 m depth.

Tofo Scuba (S23-51'19.3" E035-32'59.0") in 'CASA BARRY' / http://www.tofoscuba.co.za/
fan dive; R320 / 2nd, 3rd dive becomes lower price. Finally the 10th dive becomes free.
far reef;+R40, credit card payment;+5%, PADI course;(open water)R2500, (advanced)R2200
Another currency is also available. 'MANTA Reef' is almost every 2 days.
Tofo Scuba has a little more guests than Diversity Scuba. You'll dive with many people, if you join Tofo Scuba course, I think.

Diversity Scuba (S23-51'16.2" E035-32'44.5") http://www.diversityscuba.com/
Everything is same as Tofo Scuba. The differences is the following points.
snorkelling(watching whale sharks);R250, rental camera; R200, burning a CD-R;R200

(in Barra)
Barra Lodge (S23-47'30.5" E035-30'38.9") www.barralodge.co.za
fan dive;R155, (equipment rental)+R100, far reef;+R15..50 / VISA card acceptable without commission.
They have a 'MANTA Reef' diving. But the problem is there are few guests who can dive until 20 m. The rate is lower than TOFO. (Refer to 'accommodation')

in Gorongosa
No ATM & supermarket
petrol station (S18-40'57.6" E034-04'13.2") looks like a cottage, but not a black market petrol.
crossing to Inhaminga (S18-40'12.3" E034-04'40.2") The way to Inhaminga is bad. To Sena is paved.

in Caia
No ATM & petrol station
crossing to Sena (S17-49'53.2" E035-20'12.7")

in Sena
No ATM & petrol station. But a bottle store is.
crossing to the border (S17-26'49.2" E035-01'51.6") You'll pass a big bridge before the border.

petrol station and ATM town;
Tete(26,130/L, ATM)--(247km!)--Catandica(24,500/L)--Chimoio(?/L, ATM)--Muxungue(Nova Golega)(27,000/L)--Save(27,930/L)--Inhassoro(26,630/L)--Vilanculos(26,550/L)--Massinga(25,670/L, ATM)--Maxixe(22,500?/L)--Inhambane(?/L, ATM)
Inter small towns sell black-market petrol. In Maxixe the petrol is the cheapest.

border **********************************************
Mwanza-Zobue (entry from MALAWI);
tax; $2 or R10, temporary import document; $5 or Mk1000 (30 days) AIT/FIA carnet is NOT acceptable. The admission of the car insurance will be asked.
You can get MOZAMBIQUE visa here. But at the border, 'Nsanje (the end of the south of Malawi)' it is impossible to get a visa.
Blantyre--(pavement, 110km)--Mwanza(the last petrol station)--border(pavement, 5km)--Zobwe

Nsanje (leaving for MALAWI);
No money is required. Sometimes Yellow Card is checked when you enter MALAWI. The admission of the car insurance will be asked. Be careful, in MALAWI there are often insurance checks by police. Some changers are at MOZAMBIQUE side.
I don't recommend this border. Because it's a long distance from the border to a big town in MALAWI and MOZAMBIQUE. In MALAWI from the border to near Blantyre, the road is earth road.

road **********************************************
Most main roads are pavement. But some sections are gravel even though main roads.
From Gorongosa to Inhaminga is rough road. From Gorongosa to Sena is pavement.
Michelin map shows some old roads and towns. Today is a little different from them.

GPS **********************************************

  1. mozambique.gdb (for GARMIN 'Map Souce' file)
  2. mozambique.rtf (GPS eXchange format file) You need to rename the file!
  3. plain text (html)

route & track;

  • NSANJE BORDER (minor border between the south of MALAWI and the north of MOZAMBIQUE)
  • INCHOPE-TOFO (the way to TOFO)
